NEW YORK – On Saturday, January 22, 2022, Congressman Lee Zeldin, who has been named the presumptive nominee for Governor of New York by both the New York Republican and Conservative Parties, joined New York State Senator Patty Ritchie and other elected officials and stakeholders in Ogdensburg to discuss the closure of Ogdensburg Correctional Facility, the future of the site and those employed there.

Following the press conference, Congressman Zeldin toured the Ogdensburg Correctional Facility and spoke to staff affected by the closures.

Congressman Zeldin said, “If Governor Kathy Hochul had the guts to come up to Ogdensburg and hear directly from the constituents she’s affected, she would have heard from local residents passionate about the lifeblood of their economy being ripped away from them. She would have heard from amazing corrections officers who love working at Ogdensburg Correctional Facility, are proud they have one of the lowest rates of use of force and unusual incidents in the entire state, and are extremely disappointed that it is all ending this way.

“Every New Yorker has the right to feel like their voice is being represented in Albany, and for too long the North Country’s priorities have been sidelined for New York City’s. As Governor, I will do what Kathy Hochul won’t. I will listen to and fight for the North Country residents the Governor is supposed to represent.”

During the visit, Congressman Zeldin discussed the positions he’d advocate for to improve the lives of Corrections Officers and those incarcerated in facilities around the state. Among many other solutions Congressman Zeldin has been offering to address this issue, he detailed his support of the following ten policy positions during his remarks:
  • Increasing the budget for the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to hire more correctional officers and improve the ratio to inmates;
  • Appointing a Commissioner who will put correctional officers, employees, visitors, and volunteers before inmates;
  • Repealing the HALT Solitary Confinement Act;
  • Commissioning a violence study in New York State prisons that would also identify additional recommended improvements;
  • Setting prison populations based on crimes committed instead of political calculations;
  • Repealing Cashless Bail and the Less is More Act;
  • Overhauling the Board of Parole as detailed in Congressman Zeldin’s rebuttal to Hochul’s State of the State address;

Congressman Zeldin Statement on NYPD Officers Killed in Harlem

NEW YORK – Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), who has been named the presumptive nominee for Governor of New York by both the Republican and Conservative Parties, issued the following statement after two New York City Police Officers were shot and killed in the line of duty in Harlem:

“This has to stop. It won’t stop until elected officials in New York reverse the attacks on public safety, law enforcement, and law-abiding citizens who should be free and in control of their streets instead of the current, very dangerous situation with criminals in charge.

“My heart goes out to the families of these two brave police officers and the entire NYPD family.

“Every day, we read about another police officer injured. Every week, we hear about a police officer shot or killed in the line of duty. In New York City, criminals rule our streets and our elected officials hang them out to dry. Enough is enough. We must support our law enforcement officers more not less. We must ensure they have the resources they need to protect themselves, and most importantly we must hold criminals responsible. Compared to Hochul’s .07%, Over 22% of Zeldin Fundraising is from Small Dollar Donations, Underscoring Record Grassroots Support Emerging

NEW YORK – In the most recent campaign filing for Governor, only .07% (approximately $146,000) of Kathy Hochul’s total fundraising came from donors giving $250 or less. By comparison, Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), who has been named the presumptive nominee for Governor of New York by both the Republican and Conservative Parties, reported over 22% of donations to his campaign this filing were $250 or less.

Of the $4.3 million Congressman Zeldin reported in this filing, over $939,000 was from nearly 20,000 small dollar donations of $250 or less.

“As I speak with New Yorkers across the state, there is a consistent outpouring of very strong grassroots support from voters of all walks of life. Congressman Zeldin Slams Hochul’s TAP Expansion, Prioritizing Prisoners Over Struggling Law-Abiding New Yorkers

NEW YORK – Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), who has been named the presumptive nominee for Governor of New York by both the Republican and Conservative Parties, issued the following statement on Governor Kathy Hochul’s proposal to make incarcerated individuals eligible for the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP):

“New York families throughout our state have worked hard, followed the rules, and fought to provide a better life for their family. Oftentimes, this involves saving up everything they can to send their children off to college, and New York’s Tuition Assistance Program has given many families the resources they need to make ends meet and make that dream a reality. If Albany wants to make changes to this program, it must be targeted to these everyday, law-abiding New Yorkers who don’t quite make the cut under the current rules. Rather than increasing the outdated income limit, Kathy Hochul has decided to expand eligibility to incarcerated individuals. Recidivism efforts are important, but not when it sidelines New Yorkers who have followed the rules but just miss the cut off. If Albany decides to make any changes to TAP, it should be targeted to the law-abiding New Yorkers who currently can’t afford college.”

The last time the family income eligibility threshold for TAP was raised was 2000 when it was lifted from $50,500 to $80,000.

Congressman Lee Zeldin Rakes in Over $8.4 Million Since Announcing, from Nearly 34,000 Donations

NEW YORK – Since announcing his bid for Governor of New York on April 8, 2021,  Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), who has been named the presumptive nominee for Governor of New York by both the Republican and Conservative Parties,has raked in $8.4 million in receipts. This marks the most a Republican candidate for statewide office in New York has raised in a non-election year in two decades.

This filing, Congressman Zeldin reported over $4.3 million in receipts from over 21,000 donations, 90% of which are $100 or less, and over $5.6 million cash on hand. Since announcing his candidacy for Governor, Congressman Zeldin has received nearly 34,000 donations.

Congressman Zeldin said, “Since announcing our campaign for Governor, the massive outpouring of grassroots support from every corner of our state has only grown stronger. New Yorkers from every walk of life are fed up with one-party rule, with the attacks on their freedoms, their wallets, their safety and their kids’ education, and they’re taking action.

About Lee Zeldin
Lee Zeldin was born and raised on Long Island. He grew up in Suffolk County and graduated from William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach, where his identical twin daughters attend school today. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Albany and then his law degree from Albany Law School, becoming New York’s youngest attorney at the time at the age of 23.
Lee spent four years on Active Duty with the U.S. Army after completing ROTC and served in different capacities, including as a Military Intelligence Officer, Prosecutor, and Military Magistrate. In the State Senate, Lee successfully fought to repeal the MTA Payroll Tax for 80 percent of employers, a job killing tax that was hurting small businesses. Lee led the successful efforts to repeal the Saltwater Fishing License Fee and create the PFC Joseph Dwyer Program, a statewide program in New York to help our returning veterans cope with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Lee also wrote the law that protects our fallen veterans and their families from protests at military burials.

Congressman Zeldin Blasts NY State Mandate that Sidelines Many Kids Without Booster Shots From Extracurricular Activities

NEW YORK – Today, Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), who has been declared the presumptive nominee for Governor of New York by both the Republican and Conservative Parties, issued the following statement after the New York State Health Department issued a mandate that would sideline many students who haven’t received booster shots from participating in extracurricular activities

“The Hochul Administration is now sidelining many kids who don’t have their booster shots, stopping them from participating in extracurricular activities. Kathy Hochul needs to go! The decision to get the COVID vaccine belongs to parents ONLY, not the government! Not only have students always been at very low risk of death and serious bodily harm as a result of COVID, but the Omicron variant is generally causing much milder reactions. On top of that, vaccinated and unvaccinated New Yorkers are widely testing positive with COVID, and testing and PPE remain as options. Vaccination isn’t stopping the spread of the Omicron variant. There is no good reason to segregate and discriminate against New York kids like this. Our children aren’t Hochul’s political pawns or guinea pigs.”

Congressman Zeldin Slams DA Bragg’s Downgrading of Felonies to Misdemeanors, Continues Demand Hochul Remove Him

NEW YORK – Today, Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), who has been declared the presumptive nominee for Governor of New York by both the Republican and Conservative Parties, issued the following statement following Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office downgrading another felony robbery charge to a misdemeanor of petit larceny:

“The rest of us refuse to accept this as the new normal in Manhattan. Commit a robbery, threatening to stab your target with a knife, and under new Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg your charges will be reduced across the board! It’s clear Alvin Bragg sides with criminals with long rap sheets rather than law-abiding New Yorkers and law enforcement. The DA is refusing to do his job so Kathy Hochul must do hers and use her explicit constitutional authority to remove Alvin Bragg. Her pathetic silence is deafening!”
